Great topics of legitimate current events the kids should be aware of. They seem excited about the project and I was curious myself. Your blog indicates the topics For this project but I wasn't real clear on how the final presentation or debate was going to be structured. Is part of the class "for" and the other "against" each topic which will culminate in a final debate situation? Or is this structued in a different way to encourage the kids to formulate opinions based on their own research and present? They seem excited and even talked about possibly presenting at the state level. Given that I would certainly love the opportunity to watch the final debate process which should be impressive to see. This is a great skill for kids of this age to learn, rather than blindly assume truth is the truth because someone else told them so. Great to know they're given an opportunity for independent, creative expression and I look forward to watching the final "show down" if us parents are able to do so.....and our kids approve our presence!! Thanks again and let me know a time frame of when we might be able watch them in action.
ReplyDeleteMichael,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your interest in Project Citizen. The students will be presenting next week. We usually do present at the state competition but this years Badger 8 testing and the consumption of technological resources and modified scheduling made the time frame for finishing the project for the state competition unattainable. I will keep in touch and let you know when we have a date set here at school. It will probably be next Thursday or Friday. The students need to have researched both sides of the topic advantages/disadvantages and express that in their essay/oral presentation, but they are all working on a policy together. I hope this answers your question. Also - sorry I didn't see this earlier - I don't think anyone has ever commented on my blog so I don't usually scroll down to check. :) PJ Harper
